2025 Distinguished Service Award - Janice Burns

Three portraits of a woman, Mrs. Janice Burns, are arranged in a collage.Janice Burns, the 2025 recipient of the Festus R-VI Distinguished Service Award, dedicated nearly 40 years of her life to the students and staff of the Festus School District. But it didn’t start that way. She began her career on a different path but later felt called to the classroom. It took nearly 20 years before she entered it, but when she did, she made it her life’s work.

Burns began her career in the Festus School District as a substitute teacher in 1974. She quickly transitioned into a full-time role as a third-grade teacher at Festus Elementary School, where she remained for 23 years. During that time, she served her students with care and commitment, tutoring those who struggled and making a lasting impact on everyone she taught. She was also a mentor to new teachers and represented her colleagues as a Missouri State Teachers Association building representative. She played a key role in helping Festus Elementary earn both State Gold Star and National Blue Ribbon honors.

After retiring from the classroom, Burns continued her service to the District. In 1999, she was elected to the Festus R-VI Board of Education, where she served until her resignation in 2013 due to declining health. During her tenure, she led the board as its president for many years.

Outside of education, Janice was active in her community. She volunteered with the American Red Cross, serving meals during the Flood of 1993. She was also active at Our Lady Catholic Church and served on the board of directors at Joachim Golf Club. She was a charter member of the Joachim Ladies Golf League.

Janice Burns passed away in October 2013, just months after stepping down from the Board of Education. For her nearly 40 years of service to the Festus School District—as both a teacher and board member—the District is proud to posthumously award the 2025 Distinguished Service Award to Mrs. Janice Burns.
